Banister

Watershed Hydrology

The Banister Watershed (HUC 03010105) is located in central Virginia and covers an area of approximately 383 square miles. The majority of the watershed is forested, with some agricultural land and residential development. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Banister River, which flows through the center of the watershed and is fed by numerous tributaries. Snowpack is not a major factor in this region. Surface water quality is generally good, although there have been some issues with fecal coliform bacteria in some areas. There are several small reservoirs in the watershed that are used for drinking water supply and recreation. Interesting climatic facts include the region's tendency to experience droughts and flooding events. In recent years, there has been an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and flash floods.
