Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Broad Watershed (HUC 03050106) covers an area of approximately 1,325 square miles in central Tennessee. The hydrology of the area is dominated by the Cumberland River, which flows through the center of the watershed. The area receives an average of 50 inches of rainfall per year, with the majority occurring in the winter and spring months. The watershed is also home to several large reservoirs, including Old Hickory Lake and J. Percy Priest Lake, which are used for flood control, hydroelectric power, and recreation. The snowpack in the area is typically minimal, with only occasional winter storms bringing significant snowfall. Interesting climatic trends include increasing temperatures and more frequent and intense precipitation events, which have led to increased flooding in the area in recent years. Additionally, the area is prone to severe thunderstorms, which can produce damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes.
