Watershed Hydrology

The Kissimmee Watershed (HUC 03090101) is located in central Florida and covers an area of approximately 3,600 square miles. The watershed is primarily fed by rainfall and experiences a subtropical climate, characterized by hot and humid summers and mild winters. The watershed is known for its extensive wetland systems, including the Kissimmee River, which flows for 103 miles through the watershed. The river was channelized in the 1960s to control flooding, but this caused the degradation of the ecosystem. A restoration project began in the 1990s to restore the river's natural meandering flow and improve water quality. The watershed contains several man-made reservoirs, including Lake Kissimmee, which is known for its bass fishing. The watershed is also home to the largest concentration of bald eagles in the contiguous United States.
