Alapaha

Watershed Hydrology

The Alapaha watershed covers approximately 3,028 square miles in southern Georgia and northern Florida. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Alapaha River, which is fed by numerous small tributaries. The region experiences a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Snowfall is rare, and typically does not accumulate significantly. The surface water in the watershed is generally of good quality, although there have been some issues with nutrient pollution from agricultural runoff. There are several small reservoirs within the watershed, including Banks Lake and Lake Alapaha. These reservoirs provide recreational opportunities for local residents and visitors. In recent years, the region has experienced drought conditions, leading to lower water levels in the river and reservoirs. Overall, the Alapaha watershed is an important ecological and economic resource for the region.
