Watershed Hydrology

The Etowah Watershed (HUC 03150104) covers 1,510 square miles in northern Georgia. It is characterized by a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool winters. The watershed receives an average of 53 inches of precipitation annually, with the majority falling as rain. Snowfall in the area is typically minimal, with an average of 2-3 inches per year. The Etowah River is the main surface water feature in the watershed, flowing for 163 miles and providing water for several reservoirs. These reservoirs, including Allatoona Lake and Carters Lake, are important sources of drinking water and recreation for the region. However, they also contain high levels of sediment and nutrients, leading to issues with eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. In recent years, the Etowah Watershed has experienced increased development and urbanization, leading to concerns about water quality and quantity. Efforts are underway to protect and restore the watershed, including stream restoration projects and conservation easements. Despite these efforts, the watershed remains vulnerable to drought and extreme weather events, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and management.
