Upper Coosa

Watershed Hydrology

The Upper Coosa Watershed encompasses an area of approximately 2,659 square miles in northwest Georgia and northeast Alabama. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Coosa River, which flows through several large reservoirs, including Lake Allatoona and Lake Weiss. The area experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Snowfall is relatively rare but can occur during winter months. Surface water quality in the watershed is impacted by agricultural runoff, urban development, and industrial activities. Reservoir constituents include largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish, which are popular targets for recreational fishing. Recent climatic trends in the region include an increase in overall temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and severe storms. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the watershed's natural resources and improve water quality.
