Watershed Hydrology

The Mulberry Watershed (HUC 03160109) covers approximately 439 square miles in northwest Arkansas. The watershed is characterized by rolling hills and forests, with the Mulberry River serving as the primary water source. The region experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Snowpack in the area is typically minimal, with an average annual snowfall of less than 5 inches. Surface water in the watershed is used for recreational activities such as fishing and kayaking, as well as for agriculture and drinking water supply. The Mulberry River is home to numerous fish species, including smallmouth bass and Ozark bass. Reservoirs in the watershed, such as Lake Fort Smith and Lake Wedington, provide additional recreational opportunities. In recent years, the region has experienced an increase in extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and flooding. This has led to concerns about the impact of climate change on the area's hydrology and water resources.
