Watershed Hydrology

The Pike Root Watershed (HUC 04040002) is located in southwestern Montana and covers an area of approximately 1,070 square miles. The watershed contains several major streams, including the Ruby River and the Beaverhead River, which flow into the Jefferson River. The area experiences a semi-arid climate, with cold winters and mild summers. Snowpack accumulation in the watershed is an important source of water for the region, contributing to spring runoff and summer streamflow. The watershed also contains several reservoirs, including Clark Canyon Reservoir, which serves as a water source for irrigation, recreation, and fish habitat. Recent climate trends in the area have shown increasing temperatures and decreasing snowpack, which could have significant impacts on the water resources and ecosystem of the Pike Root Watershed.
