Lower Monongahela

Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Monongahela Watershed, located in southwestern Pennsylvania, covers an area of approximately 5,500 square miles. It is primarily composed of forests and agricultural land, with several urbanized areas, including Pittsburgh. The watershed is fed by numerous small streams and tributaries, ultimately flowing into the Ohio River. The region experiences a humid continental climate, with average annual precipitation of around 40 inches. The area experiences moderate snowfall during the winter months, which can lead to snowpack accumulation in higher elevations. There are several reservoirs located within the Lower Monongahela Watershed, including the Youghiogheny River Lake and the Monongahela River Pool. These reservoirs help regulate water flow and provide recreational opportunities. One interesting climatic trend in the region is increasing temperatures, which have risen by approximately 2°F since the 20th century. This warming trend could have significant impacts on hydrology and ecosystem dynamics within the watershed.
