Middle Fork Kentucky
Watershed Hydrology
The Middle Fork Kentucky watershed, also known as HUC 05100202, covers an area of approximately 1,130 square miles in eastern Kentucky. The region is characterized by the Appalachian Mountains and has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The watershed is primarily forested and includes parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The Middle Fork of the Kentucky River flows through the watershed and provides water for several downstream communities. The area experiences significant snowfall during the winter months, with an average snowpack of around 15 inches. Surface water quality in the region is affected by mining activities, which have led to high levels of sedimentation and heavy metal contamination. The watershed also includes several reservoirs, including the Buckhorn Lake and the Cave Run Lake. The Buckhorn Lake is used for power generation and recreational activities, while the Cave Run Lake serves as a primary water source for the city of Lexington and supplies water for irrigation and industrial use.
