Watershed Hydrology

The Rough Watershed (HUC 05110004) is located in the eastern part of Kentucky and covers an area of 888 square miles. The region is characterized by steep terrain and is home to several streams, including the North Fork Kentucky River and the Red River. The hydrology of the area is influenced by the underlying geology, which consists primarily of sandstone and shale. The region experiences a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, and specific snowpack varies from year to year. Surface water quality in the region has been impacted by past mining activities, which have resulted in high levels of sediment and heavy metals. There are several reservoirs in the area, including Cave Run Lake, which is used for flood control and recreation. Climate trends in the area indicate that temperatures are increasing, and precipitation is becoming more variable.
