Flatrock-Haw

Watershed Hydrology

The Flatrock-Haw watershed, located in central North Carolina, covers approximately 169 square miles. It is primarily an agricultural area, with some suburban development around larger cities. The hydrology of the watershed is heavily influenced by several large reservoirs that provide drinking water for the region. The area experiences a mild climate, with average temperatures ranging from around 50 degrees Fahrenheit in winter to 80 degrees Fahrenheit in summer. Snowfall is infrequent and typically light. Surface water in the watershed is generally of good quality, though there are some areas of concern due to agricultural runoff. Reservoir constituents include phosphorus, nitrogen, and sediment. Trends in the watershed include increasing development pressures and a growing demand for water resources. Efforts are underway to address these challenges through conservation and management programs.
