Rolling Fork

Watershed Hydrology

The Rolling Fork watershed covers an area of approximately 1,254 square miles in central Kentucky. It is characterized by a hilly terrain, with elevations ranging from 500 to 1,200 feet. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by the Rolling Fork River, which flows for 100 miles through the area. The watershed receives an average annual precipitation of 46 inches, with a significant portion occurring as snow during the winter months. The snowpack in the watershed contributes to the surface water availability during the dry summer months. The major surface water reservoir in the watershed is the Green River Lake, which is used for flood control, recreation, and water supply. The reservoir is also an important habitat for fish and wildlife. The watershed experiences a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Trends in the climate include increasing temperatures and precipitation variability.
