Liberty Bayou-Tchefuncta

Watershed Hydrology

The Liberty Bayou Tchefuncta Watershed covers an area of approximately 330 square miles in southeastern Louisiana. It is fed by several small streams and tributaries that flow into the Tchefuncta River, which eventually empties into Lake Pontchartrain. The watershed is characterized by a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Average annual precipitation is around 62 inches, with occasional snowfall in the winter months. Surface water in the watershed is generally of good quality, but there are concerns about the presence of excess nutrients and sediment in some areas. The primary reservoir in the watershed is the Abita Springs Reservoir, which serves as a source of drinking water for the town of Abita Springs. In recent years, the watershed has experienced increased development and urbanization, which has led to concerns about water quality and flooding. Efforts are underway to implement better management practices to protect the health of the watershed and its inhabitants.
