Middle Milk

Watershed Hydrology

The Middle Milk watershed (HUC 10050004) covers an area of approximately 2,880 square miles in northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana. The hydrology of the area is characterized by the Middle Milk River and its tributaries, which provide important water resources for agriculture and wildlife. The watershed receives an average of 24 inches of snowfall annually, which contributes to the snowpack that feeds the river system. Surface water quality is impacted by sediment and nutrient runoff from agricultural activities, as well as mining and energy development. There are several reservoirs in the watershed that serve as important water storage and recreation areas. Interesting climatic trends include a recent increase in extreme precipitation events, a decrease in snowpack, and a warming trend in temperatures. These trends may have significant implications for the agriculture, wildlife, and water resources of the Middle Milk watershed in the future.
