Watershed Hydrology

The Pryor watershed (HUC 10070008) is located in southern Montana and encompasses an area of approximately 277 square miles. The watershed is characterized by a high elevation, with the Pryor Mountains serving as the primary hydrologic feature. The watershed receives an average of 22 inches of precipitation annually, with a significant portion of this falling as snow during the winter months. Snowpack in the Pryor Mountains is a critical source of surface water for the watershed during the spring and summer months. Surface water in the watershed is primarily sourced from the Pryor Creek, which flows southeast towards the Bighorn River. The watershed is also home to several reservoirs, including the Pryor Reservoir and the Lower Pryor Reservoir. Interesting climatic facts include the watershed's susceptibility to drought, with several significant drought events occurring over the past century. Additionally, trends suggest an increase in winter precipitation and a decrease in summer precipitation in the region.
