Watershed Hydrology
The Pipestem Watershed (HUC 10160002) is located in West Virginia and covers approximately 157 square miles. It is a part of the Ohio River Basin and is bordered by the Bluestone River to the south. The watershed is characterized by steep mountainous terrain and is primarily forested with some agricultural land use. The area experiences a humid continental climate, with average annual precipitation of 45 inches. The hydrology of the watershed is heavily influenced by snowpack accumulation in the winter months, which can lead to increased runoff in the spring as the snow melts. Surface water in the watershed includes several tributaries of the Bluestone River as well as numerous smaller streams and creeks. There are several reservoirs located within the watershed, including East Lynn Lake and Beech Fork Lake. These reservoirs are used for flood control, recreation, and as a source of drinking water. Climate trends in the area include an increase in average annual temperatures, with a corresponding decrease in snowpack accumulation. This trend is expected to continue in the future, leading to changes in the hydrology of the watershed.
