Medicine Bow

Watershed Hydrology

The Medicine Bow Watershed (HUC 10180004) covers an area of approximately 4,280 square miles in southeastern Wyoming and northern Colorado. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate with annual precipitation ranging from 10 to 25 inches, and average snowpack levels of approximately 50 inches. The watershed is mainly fed by snowmelt, which occurs from late April to early June. The main surface water bodies in the watershed include the North Platte River, the Encampment River, and the Little Snake River. The primary reservoirs in the watershed are the Seminoe Reservoir and the Pathfinder Reservoir. The climatic trend in the watershed is towards increasing temperatures, which have led to reduced snowpack levels and earlier snowmelt. This has resulted in decreased water availability during the summer months, which has impacted agriculture and other water-dependent industries in the region.
