Watershed Hydrology

The Sweetwater Watershed (HUC 10180006) covers an area of approximately 1,079 square miles in central Wyoming. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual precipitation of 10 to 12 inches. The area’s hydrology is dominated by the Sweetwater River, a major tributary of the North Platte River. The watershed receives most of its water supply from snowmelt, which typically peaks in May and June. The snowpack in the area is highly variable and can range from as little as 50% of average to over 150% of average. The watershed contains several reservoirs, including the Seminoe Reservoir and the Pathfinder Reservoir, which are used for irrigation and municipal water supply. Interesting climatic trends in the area include an increase in average annual temperatures and an increase in extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.
