Watershed Hydrology

The Tarkio Wolf Watershed covers an area of approximately 186,000 acres in northwest Missouri. The watershed is primarily agricultural, with predominantly row crop agriculture and livestock grazing. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by a well-defined drainage network, including the Tarkio and Wolf rivers, which are the major streams in the area. The snowpack in the region is generally light, with average winter temperatures ranging from 20-40°F. Surface water in the watershed is primarily used for irrigation and recreation, with very little municipal use. The reservoirs within the watershed contain low levels of sediment and nutrients. Interesting climatic facts include high humidity throughout the year and a relatively high frequency of severe weather events, including thunderstorms and tornadoes. Trends in the watershed include increasing nutrient levels in surface water and a decrease in forested land due to agricultural expansion.
