Upper Cimarron-Liberal

Watershed Hydrology

The Upper Cimarron-Liberal Watershed (HUC 11040006) spans across an area of approximately 3,764 square miles in the southwestern region of Kansas and the northwestern region of Oklahoma. The watershed is dominated by a semi-arid climate with an annual average temperature of 57.4°F, and an average annual precipitation of 20 inches, mostly in the form of snow during winter. Snowpack plays an important role in recharging the surface water and groundwater systems that support the area's agricultural and industrial activities. The watershed contains several reservoirs, including the Hulah Lake, the Fort Supply Lake, and the Optima Lake, which provide significant water storage and recreational opportunities. The reservoirs harbor some of the most important fish species, including walleye, bass, and catfish. However, the area is susceptible to frequent droughts, and climatic models suggest that the area will experience more extreme weather conditions in the future, which will pose significant challenges to its water management strategies.
