Middle North Fork Red

Watershed Hydrology

The Middle North Fork Red watershed (HUC 11120302) covers approximately 534 square miles in north-central Colorado. This high elevation watershed is characterized by a snowmelt-driven hydrology, with snowpack accumulation in the winter and spring and peak flows in late spring and early summer. Surface water in the watershed includes the North Fork of the Cache la Poudre River, as well as several smaller streams and tributaries. There are no major reservoirs in the watershed. Interesting climatic facts include the area's high elevation and its exposure to both Pacific and Arctic weather systems, which can result in extreme temperature fluctuations and heavy snowfall. Recent trends in the region include warming temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns, which could have significant impacts on water resources and ecosystems in the watershed.
