Watershed Hydrology

The Spring Watershed (HUC 12040102) spans over 1,000 square miles in northern Idaho and western Montana. It is fed by melting snowpack from the Bitterroot Mountains, which contributes to the high flow rates and sediment loads of the Clark Fork River. The watershed contains several large reservoirs, which provide water for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. The area has seen an increase in average temperatures and a decrease in snowpack, leading to concerns about water availability during the dry summer months. The watershed is also home to many species of fish, including bull trout and westslope cutthroat trout, which are threatened by habitat fragmentation and degradation. Efforts are being made to restore riparian areas and improve water quality in the watershed to support these important species.
