Watershed Hydrology

The San Miguel Watershed (HUC 14030003) is located in southwest Colorado and covers an area of approximately 721 square miles. It is a high-elevation watershed with elevations ranging from 5,000 to 14,000 feet. The watershed is part of the Colorado River Basin and is predominantly fed by snowmelt. The snowpack in the watershed is typically deep and lingers well into the summer months, providing a crucial source of water for the region. The watershed is home to several surface water reservoirs, including the Miramonte Reservoir and the Groundhog Reservoir. These reservoirs primarily store water for irrigation purposes. In recent years, the watershed has experienced warmer temperatures and decreased snowpack, leading to concerns about future water availability. Additionally, the area is prone to frequent wildfires due to dry conditions and increased fuel loads.
