Watershed Hydrology

The Lower Yampa Watershed, located in northwestern Colorado, encompasses approximately 7,210 square miles of land. The hydrology of the area is primarily influenced by the Yampa River, which runs through the watershed and is fed by several tributaries. The area receives an average snowpack of 82 inches, with the highest elevations receiving up to 200 inches. Surface water in the Lower Yampa Watershed is used for irrigation, municipal water supply, and recreation, and there are several reservoirs within the watershed. Constituents of these reservoirs include trout, bass, and other fish species. The Lower Yampa Watershed experiences a semi-arid climate, with average annual precipitation ranging from 8 to 20 inches. In recent years, there has been a trend of increasing temperature and decreasing snowpack, which has implications for water availability in the region.
