Watershed Hydrology

The McElmo Watershed (HUC 14080202) covers approximately 1,159 square miles in southwestern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate with low annual precipitation and high evapotranspiration rates. Snowpack in the area is typically limited, with most precipitation falling as rain in the summer months. Surface water resources in the watershed are primarily supplied by the McElmo Creek and its tributaries, which flow into the Dolores River. There are several small reservoirs in the watershed, but they are primarily used for irrigation purposes. Interesting climatic trends in the region include a long-term increase in temperature and a decrease in precipitation over the past several decades. These trends have had significant impacts on water resources in the McElmo Watershed, resulting in reduced streamflow and increased water scarcity.
