Watershed Hydrology

The Kanab Watershed, located in southern Utah and northern Arizona, covers an area of approximately 1,600 square miles. The hydrology of the watershed is characterized by a complex network of streams and springs that support a diverse range of aquatic species. The region receives around 12 inches of precipitation per year, with the majority falling as snow during the winter months. The snowpack serves as a critical source of water for the region, replenishing surface water and groundwater reserves. The watershed also includes several reservoirs that are used for irrigation and drinking water. Notably, the region has experienced a prolonged drought over the past decade, resulting in declining snowpack levels and reduced water availability. Climate change projections suggest that this trend is likely to continue, putting additional pressure on the ecosystem and water resources of the Kanab Watershed.
