Watershed Hydrology

The Muddy Watershed (HUC 15010012) covers approximately 2,326 square miles in southeast Nevada and southwest Utah. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild winters. Precipitation is limited, with most falling as rain during the summer monsoon season. Snowpack is generally minimal, with the highest elevations receiving the most. The watershed contains several reservoirs, including Lake Mead, which is the primary source of drinking water for the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The water quality in the reservoirs is affected by agricultural and urban runoff, as well as natural erosion. Climate change is also affecting the watershed, with increasing temperatures and decreasing snowpack. These changes may lead to reduced water availability and quality in the future.
