Utah Lake

Watershed Hydrology

The Utah Lake watershed (HUC 16020201) spans 3,211 square miles and encompasses parts of seven counties in Utah. The majority of the watershed is semi-arid with a desert climate, but the higher elevations experience a more temperate climate. The watershed is fed by several major rivers and streams, including the Provo River and American Fork River, and is home to Utah Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the state. The snowpack in the watershed provides a vital source of water for the region and has been impacted by climate change in recent years. The lake and surrounding areas also face water quality issues due to runoff from urban areas and agriculture, leading to high levels of nutrients and algae blooms. Interesting climatic trends include a steady decrease in snowpack and an increase in average temperature over the past few decades.
