Spanish Fork

Watershed Hydrology

The Spanish Fork Watershed (HUC 16020202) covers an area of approximately 575 square miles in central Utah. The watershed is characterized by mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from 4,000 to 11,000 feet. Precipitation in the area is highly variable, with an average annual precipitation of around 20 inches. Snowpack is an important component of the water supply, with snowmelt accounting for up to 70% of annual streamflow. The main surface water feature in the watershed is the Spanish Fork River, which flows into Utah Lake. The watershed contains several reservoirs, including Diamond Fork Reservoir, Spanish Oaks Reservoir, and Strawberry Reservoir. These reservoirs serve as important sources of water for irrigation and municipal use. Recent climate trends in the watershed have included a decrease in snowpack and earlier snowmelt, which can impact water availability later in the year. In addition, the area has experienced an increase in average temperatures over the past few decades. These trends may have implications for the water resources and ecology of the watershed.
