Watershed Hydrology

The Similkameen watershed (HUC 17020007) covers an area of approximately 6,700 km² in southern British Columbia and northern Washington. The watershed is characterized by a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. During the winter and spring, snowpack accumulates in the mountains, providing a critical source of water for the region. The Similkameen River is the primary surface water feature in the watershed, flowing through steep-walled canyons and valleys. There are several reservoirs in the watershed, including the Enloe Dam on the Similkameen River. The reservoirs are used for irrigation, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation. Interesting climatic facts include the high variability of precipitation and snowpack from year to year, with some years experiencing drought conditions. Climate change projections suggest that the area will experience warmer temperatures and more precipitation falling as rain rather than snow.
