Gros Ventre

Watershed Hydrology

The Gros Ventre watershed (HUC 17040102) covers an area of 1,726 square miles in western Wyoming. The hydrology of the watershed is dominated by snowmelt, which provides the majority of the surface water supply. The snowpack in the watershed is highly variable due to its location in a region with frequent weather changes that can result in rapid changes in snow accumulation and melt. There are no major reservoirs in the watershed, but there are several smaller reservoirs that are used for irrigation and municipal water supply. The watershed experiences a semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters. In recent years, the region has experienced warming temperatures, which have led to changes in the snowpack and timing of snowmelt. These changes have significant impacts on water availability and management in the region.
