Watershed Hydrology

The Calleguas Watershed is located in southern California and covers an area of approximately 225 square miles. The hydrology of the watershed is heavily influenced by the mountain ranges surrounding it, which receive winter snowpack that slowly melts and contributes to surface water runoff. The area is also prone to severe droughts, with the most recent one lasting from 2012 to 2016. The surface water in the Calleguas Watershed is primarily used for agricultural and urban purposes, with the Calleguas Municipal Water District managing several reservoirs within the watershed. These reservoirs are composed of both imported and local water sources, and their constituents vary depending on the source. In recent years, there has been a trend towards more frequent and severe wildfires in the region, which can have significant impacts on the hydrology and water quality of the watershed. Overall, the Calleguas Watershed is a vital source of water for the surrounding communities and highlights the importance of sustainable water management practices in the face of changing climatic conditions.
