Coffin Mountain Lookout
Elevation: 5771 ft.
Built: 1984, modern flat-top roof.
Trail: 2 ½ miles, moderate
Staffing: currently staffed by Detroit Ranger District
This lookout rests atop an elongated coffin-shaped ridge, from which it derived its name. The lookout building itself is at the north end of the ridge, and a radio transmission building is in the saddle area. Historically, it is an important part of the fire detection system, having been the location of at least three other lookout structures dating back to 1905.
The trail, while somewhat long, is an easy walk through the old Coffin Mt. Burn area, with open bear-grass slopes and snags. The hike offers many overlooks and beautiful views of the Mt. Jefferson area. Detroit Lake is visible from the mountaintop. This is a very worthwhile walk and offers an excellent overview of the northern end of the Willamette National Forest.
