It was named after the Menominee word "Pashonanekah," meaning "place where there is bark." The river's hydrology is heavily influenced by groundwater and precipitation, with its discharge peaking in the spring and fall. There are three main reservoirs/dams along the river: Grand River Marsh Wildlife Area, Puchyan Prairie State Natural Area, and Lake Puckaway. These reservoirs and dams are used for flood control and water management, as well as providing recreational opportunities such as boating and fishing. The river also supports agriculture, with farms in the surrounding area relying on its water for irrigation and livestock. Despite challenges such as sedimentation and nutrient pollution, efforts are being made to maintain and improve the health of the Puchyan River ecosystem.
