Iowa is not known for its mountains, but it still has a few ski areas that offer winter sports lovers a chance to hit the slopes. The most popular ski resorts in Iowa are Sundown Mountain Resort, Seven Oaks Recreation, and Mount Crescent Ski Area.
Sundown Mountain Resort is located in Dubuque and offers 21 trails for skiing and snowboarding. The resort has an average snowfall of 35 inches per season, with the best time to visit in February. Seven Oaks Recreation in Boone has 9 trails, and the resort has an average snowfall of 40 inches per season, with the best time to visit in January. Mount Crescent Ski Area in Honey Creek has 10 trails and an average snowfall of 30 inches per season, with the best time to visit in December.
Despite the limited ski opportunities in Iowa, the state has an interesting ski history. Iowa's first ski jump was built in the 1920s, and the sport gained popularity in the state. In 1937, the Iowa Ski Association was formed, and the first state championship was held in 1941. The sport continued to grow, and Iowa even hosted the National Junior Skiing Championships in 1958.
