Tennessee may not be the first state that comes to mind when one thinks of skiing, but the Volunteer State offers a unique skiing experience that combines Southern hospitality with picturesque mountain views. Here are some of the best ski resorts in Tennessee, along with key information about snowfall, snowpack, and the optimal time to visit:

1. Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort: Located in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Ober Gatlinburg is the only ski resort in Tennessee. The resort features nine trails, ranging from beginner to advanced, and a terrain park for those who prefer freestyle skiing or snowboarding. The average snowfall at Ober Gatlinburg is around 50 inches per season, and the best time to visit is from December to February.

2. Cataloochee Ski Area: Although located in North Carolina, Cataloochee Ski Area is just a short drive from the Tennessee border, making it a popular destination for Tennessee skiers. The resort features 18 trails and slopes and a snow tubing park. The average snowfall at Cataloochee is around 50 inches per season, with the best snowpack typically in January and February.

3. Beech Mountain Resort: Another North Carolina ski resort that is close to the Tennessee border, Beech Mountain Resort offers 17 slopes and trails, a terrain park, and a snow tubing park. The average snowfall at Beech Mountain is around 80 inches per season, with the best snowpack typically in January and February.

In terms of ski history, Tennessee was once home to several small ski areas that have since closed down. One of the most notable was Cloudmont Ski and Golf Resort in Mentone, Alabama, which was just a short drive from the Tennessee border. Cloudmont opened in 1970, but due to its low elevation and inconsistent snowfall, the resort struggled to stay in business. It closed permanently in 2017.
