Ski Area Snowfall

Snowpack Depths & Snow Forecast

The District of Columbia, being an urban area, does not have specific mountain ranges that provide snow for the state. However, its snowpack conditions are influenced by weather systems moving across the region. Winter climate characteristics in the district are typically cold with average temperatures ranging from 27°F to 44°F (-3°C to 7°C). Snowfall is common but often light, with an average annual accumulation of around 15 inches (38 cm). Snow in the district mainly comes from frontal systems and nor'easters, which can bring significant snowfall but are infrequent. The Potomac River and its tributaries serve as the main runoff rivers and watersheds in the district. Snow science and history in the district are less prominent due to the urban environment and limited mountainous terrain. Therefore, snowpack conditions and related aspects are not extensively studied or documented in this particular location.
