A valid camping permit is required (no separate entrance fee), and reservations must be made in advance through the Hawaii DLNR. There are no picnic tables, fire rings, or RV access. Composting pit toilets are available, and a nearby stream provides water (must be treated). Nestled in a lush, dramatic coastal valley with towering cliffs and ocean views, the experience is remote and rugged. Best visited in the dry season (May–September), hikers enjoy waterfalls, secluded beaches, and the breathtaking 11-mile Kalalau Trail.
