CAMPING MARYLAND

Camp Loop B

May 8, 2024

The Camp Loop B camping area is located in the Green Ridge State Forest, which is a part of the Appalachian Mountains of Maryland. The surrounding views of the area are breathtaking and offer visitors a chance to connect with the natural beauty of the region. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bears, wild turkeys, and white-tailed deer. The area is also known for its beautiful fall foliage, with the leaves changing colors from mid-October to early November.

There are several nearby points of interest for visitors to explore. One of the most popular is the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, which runs along the Potomac River and offers visitors a chance to explore the 184.5-mile-long towpath on foot or by bike. Another interesting site is the Paw Paw Tunnel, a 3,118-foot-long tunnel that was built in the mid-19th century to allow boats to bypass a series of rapids on the Potomac River.

The campground amenities at Camp Loop B include fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets. Campsites are available for tents and RVs, and there is a maximum stay of 14 days. The area is also pet-friendly, but pets must be kept on a leash at all times.

Green Ridge State Forest has an interesting history, with evidence of Native American settlements dating back thousands of years. In the mid-19th century, the area was logged heavily, and the forest was used for agriculture and mining. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps began work on restoring the forest and building recreational facilities, including campgrounds, hiking trails, and picnic areas.

The best time of year to visit Camp Loop B is in the fall, when the leaves are changing colors and temperatures are mild. Average temperatures in October and November range from the mid-50s to the mid-60s during the day and drop down to the mid-30s to low-40s at night. Visitors should be aware that the campground is closed during the winter months, from December through March.
