Last Updated: February 12, 2026

Tarkio Fishing Access, located along the Clark Fork River in western Montana, offers excellent shore and float access.

Summary

Anglers can fish from the bank or launch boats at the primitive gravel ramp. The best spots include river bends, riffles, and deeper pools near the access point. This area is known for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. Fly fishing is most productive, especially with nymphs, streamers, and dry flies like elk hair caddis and mayflies during summer hatches. Spring and fall bring active feeding, making them prime seasons. Though no piers or coves exist, drift fishing from rafts or wading yields great results.

Angling Safety Guidelines

Know the Regulations
Check local fishing rules, seasons, size limits, and license requirements to ensure legal and sustainable angling.
Handle Fish Responsibly
Use wet hands, minimize air exposure, and release fish gently to improve survival rates when practicing catch-and-release.
Choose the Right Gear
Match your rod, line, and tackle to the species and conditions to increase success and reduce unnecessary harm to fish.
Respect the Waterway
Avoid disturbing habitat, prevent bank erosion, and keep a safe distance from spawning areas to protect ecosystems.
Keep It Clean
Pack out all line, hooks, bait containers, and trash—discarded gear can injure wildlife and degrade waterways.
