Bear Creek, located in the Shoshone National Forest near Cody, Wyoming, is a popular whitewater river run. The ideal streamflow range for this creek is between 150-400 cfs, although experienced kayakers may brave flows up to 700 cfs. The class rating for Bear Creek is Class III-IV, with some sections reaching Class V during high water.
The total segment mileage of Bear Creek is approximately 7 miles, with the run taking roughly 3-4 hours to complete. The creek features several challenging rapids and obstacles, including "Entrance Exam," a steep Class IV drop; "Little Niagara," a powerful Class V rapid; and "The S-Turns," a technical Class IV section.
To protect the safety of visitors, there are specific regulations in place for the Bear Creek area. It is required that all visitors wear appropriate safety gear, including a helmet, personal flotation device, and appropriate footwear. Additionally, visitors are prohibited from camping or building fires within 100 feet of the creek, and must pack out all trash and waste.
