The blowing snow in addition to new snow and high snowfall rates will lead to significant drops in visibility over a short period of time. This first snow event tapers off this evening by around 6pm. Then, the second round of snow arrives after a short break and continues through Saturday. Snow begins initially in northern Iowa late tonight with snow moving south and east with time. In southern Iowa, this second round will have a wintry mix with freezing rain and snow and ice accumulations that reach up to around one tenth of an inch before changing to snow later Saturday. In central to northern Iowa, snow will occur in bands with the highest accumulations within the band (or multiple bands) of snow and may lead to sharp cutoffs in snow amounts outside of these bands, though uncertainty remains on where these bands may occur.
