Shield volcanos are usually built by fluid magma flows, and are named for their large size and low profile, resembling a warrior's shield lying on the ground. The Sawtooth 'shield' is about 3 miles in diameter with a central crater separated by two radial dikes extending from the central plug. These features consist of olivine basalts and flows of platy andesite. Visitors to the site can view the radial dikes and central plug.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; float: none; display: inline !important; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: rgb(255, 253, 238); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;">To get to the crater and ridge, hike north up the creek drainage on the closed road for approximately 1/2 mile then head west uphill to the ridgeline. Follow the GPS coordinates below to the top of the central plug.</span></p> This site is not reservable.

Responsible visitation & Leave No Trace
- Know before you go
- Check the operator's site (BLM, NPS, state agency, or private owner) for access rules, permits, and seasonal closures before driving out.
- Stay on trail
- Many points of interest sit in fragile ecosystems. Stick to marked paths to protect vegetation and prevent erosion.
- Respect wildlife
- Observe from a distance, never feed wildlife, and give nesting birds and denning mammals plenty of space.
- Pack it in, pack it out
- Take all trash, food scraps, and gear back with you. Remote sites often have no trash service.
- Leave what you find
- Don't take rocks, plants, fossils, or artifacts. Federal law protects cultural and natural resources on public land.
