The river's main constituents are water from its tributaries, including the Ten-Mile River, and the inflow from dams, such as the Falls Village Dam. Seasonal trends indicate that flow is highest in the spring, due to snowmelt and spring rain, and lowest in the late summer and fall. Interestingly, the Housatonic River is known for its abundance of brown trout and is a popular destination for fishing. Additionally, the river was once used for industrial purposes, including paper mills and ironworks.
