The river is mainly fed by rainfall and snowmelt. The primary tributary to the South Skunk River is Squaw Creek. There are no significant dams on the river. During the spring, the river experiences high flow due to snowmelt and rain, while in the summer and fall, flow is typically lower. Interestingly, the South Skunk River got its name from the odor resembling that of a skunk that can be emitted from the river due to agricultural runoff. Despite this, the river supports a variety of aquatic life, including fish such as smallmouth bass and channel catfish.
