The stream is fed by numerous tributaries and watersheds, with significant contributions from Big Gunpowder Falls and Little Gunpowder Falls. The stream gauge measures the water levels and flow rates, which can vary greatly depending on the season. During the summer, the flow rate tends to be lower, while it rises during the winter and spring. There are several dams along the stream's length, including Prettyboy Dam and Loch Raven Dam, which can influence the flow rates and water levels downstream. Interestingly, the falls in Gunpowder Falls State Park were mentioned in the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, who lived in Baltimore.
