The reservoir receives water from the Stony Brook and several other tributaries. The flow into the reservoir is regulated by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. Seasonal trends show that the flow is highest in the springtime due to snowmelt and precipitation. The dam was constructed in 1899 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The reservoir is also a popular place for outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing. However, swimming and boating are not allowed due to water quality concerns.
