The river flows through the Gila National Forest and there are no significant dams along its main stem. There are, however, several small tributaries that contribute to its flow. The river experiences seasonal variability, with peak flows in late spring and early summer and low flows in late fall and winter. Interestingly, the San Francisco River has a unique geologic history that has resulted in a diverse range of aquatic species, including rare and threatened species such as the Gila Trout.
