The river is fed by several tributaries, including the Manatawny Creek and Hay Creek. The river is also regulated by two dams, the Blue Marsh Dam and the Pottstown Dam. Seasonally, the river experiences higher flow rates and water levels during the spring and fall due to increased precipitation. Interestingly, the Schuylkill River was once used as a transportation route for coal and other goods in the early 19th century.
